Context:
Omarion Hampton is a former 4-star recruit from North Carolina who had many D1 offers, most of which were at the Power 5 level; he ended up attending UNC. He made an immediate impact as a true freshman being a part of the RB rotation and getting a healthy amount of work in the run game. As a sophomore, his role grew, becoming the starter and bell-cow back. He broke out with 1,500 yards and 15 TDs on the ground, with another couple hundred yards and a TD as a receiver. He was named All-ACC and an All-American as a result of this season. In his Junior season, he continued his role as a bell-cow back, this time running for 1,660 yards and 15 TDs, with an expanded role as a receiver with just under 400 yards and 2 TDs, again being named to All-ACC and All-American teams.

Athletic Ability and Body Type:
Hampton has good height, good weight, average arm length, a taller frame, with a sturdily built lower body, good muscle definition, and a mostly maxed-out frame. He has very good balance, good lateral quickness, and agility with solid explosiveness, COD, and acceleration, plus adequate running speed.
Projection:
Hampton is a solid starting runningback in a gap or inside zone run scheme with very good 3-down back potential. He wins with his very good patience, vision and ability to make defenders miss and finish runs through contact. He has the tools to flourish as a receiver and pass blocker but needs further development in those areas before he establishes himself as a full-time 3-down back. He’s a runningback who will wear a defense down physically and consistently generate positive runs, yet has the ability to pop a few runs a game with his very good ability to break and evade tackles combined with his intelligence allowing him to take optimal run lanes.

In many drafts, Hampton would be in the conversation for RB1. With a prospect of Jeanty’s caliber in this draft, however, he’s at the top of the RB2 race. In terms of his draft value, he’ll almost certainly be gone within the first 50 picks, very deservingly. I think there’s a strong case to be made for him as a Late 1st round pick in this class. I’d especially keep an eye on him to go to any one of the AFC West teams.
